Why did Eric Clapton do this? | Hang a guitar mic!

November 2, 2019

we’ve all heard of eric clapton absolute
legend and he’s a fantastic guitar player i often catch myself watching
videos of eric clapton with cream or at the crossroads festival on youtube and
also i watch a lot of guitar tutorials and song lessons from cream and eric
clapton as well and crossroads is one of my favorite songs and i was watching a
video recently of eric clapton playing his brownie guitar
and something caught my eye… does it make it sound any different any better what
tone were they after I was interested because I have this small apartment that
I’m renting at the moment and there’s not enough room to leave a mic stand set
up but why did they do it lazy engineers not enough mic stands available not
enough space does it just look cool but there are a lot of videos on YouTube
saying that you shouldn’t do this yeah but I always wanted to find out for
myself I’m sort of that type of guy but placing the mic anywhere you like on the
amplifier to get the sound that you want isn’t necessarily a bad thing and yeah I
get that there are top producers out there and mix engineers that are looking
for a specific sound top mix engineers with golden ears there always going to be
looking for a specific sound I totally understand that but let’s see if there’s
a difference between hanging a mic over an amp too close miking it just off
center of the cone which is the preferred method of sound engineers
since time began for this experiment I’m going to be using a pile PDMIC 78
microphone it’s an sm57 clone and the frequency response is pretty close to
the sm57 I’ve heard this mic on other YouTube
videos and the sound comparison is very very close the pile might be a little
bit brighter than the sm57 but this should give us a good indication of the
sound differences of hanging the mic over the end verses close miking so what do you think was there a massive
sound difference hanging the microphone over the amp versus closed miking it in
this experiment I used that pile microphone it was only 12 dollars I
would highly recommend it it’s a great budget microphone and certainly if
you’ve got the sm57 and you’re looking for a second one or you just on a budget
and you want a mic a guitar amp or you want to sing vocals or you want to mic a
snare with it it’s a really usable studio microphone for 12 dollars
I appreciate your watching maybe subscribe if this is your sort of thing
give the video a like all that stuff it’s good for the algorithm or something
certainly help support this channel certainly encourages me to make more
videos when you guys comment like and subscribe it just makes it all
worthwhile I do appreciate it thanks very much and I’ll see you next time

    It was for a commercial.

It does sound darker and more bluesy i think, what are your thoughts? Also meant to put Micโ€™d and not Miked :))

This is pretty common and easy when you dont have a mic stand on hand. Not as noticable a difference with a multidirectional mic

There is a subtle difference but not enough for me to determine one to be vastly superior over the other.

the clean tones were very close to the same…but i thought there was a noticeable difference when he added some dirt to it….the hanging mic sounded much more muddy to my ears…

Wait .. your apartment is so small you donโ€™t have room for a mic stand ????

The difference is more noticeable than I thought it would be. Thanks for sharing.

I like the sound that comes from the hanging mic method. Sounds more cool and gives it a classicy tone

I guess youโ€™re more like overthinking it, I guess the hanging microphone is just like whatever we need to make this thing

Awesome video man! Was very surprised the only slight difference between the two. Definitely a little darker when hanged, but still completely usable!

Love this experiment Derek! And itโ€™s all good for the algorithm lol!!
