Have you ever heard of a swell shark? Well,
you may not know it, but you may have seen one at an aquarium, because they tend to do
well in captivity. They are a fairly small shark that averages just a little under 3
feet long. They are not known to be great swimmers, so they spend a lot of their time
hiding in holes and caves. They are also pretty shy and usually try to avoid being seen by
divers (that could be why we dont hear much about them).
Now before you start thinking that this shark is just an old boring fish, they do have something
cool, unlike other sharks. When a swell shark feels threatened, it will curve its body into
a U shape, holding its tail in its mouth and suck in as much water or air as it can to
make its body swell up. This way it can get itself stuck in a hole or just look to big
for another fish to eat. So next time you see a swell shark, make a
scary face at it and see if you can get it to swell up. If nothing else, you making faces
at sharks could be pretty funny to everyone else watching.
