Top 10 Best Prince Guitar Solos

November 9, 2019

there’s almost too many to choose from
but let’s go over some more amazing Prince guitar solos today hey everybody
Prince’s Friend here exploring music through Prince as most people know
though not everybody strangely principles a guitar master he’s put down
some of the most magnificent guitar tracks mixing in his own brand of funk
soul pop rock all these things all into one and every so often he throws on an
amazing guitar solo just for good measure so today we’re going over
another top-10 list of Prince guitar solos I’m not going to be including any
of the guitar solos that were on the top 5 guitar solos list but you can go check
that video out separately that one’s from a while back so I’ll put a link and
obviously if you liked discussions about Prince exploring different kinds of
music keeping up with some fun interviews and
just having a good time don’t forget to subscribe to the channel hit the
notifications button so you know whenever we put up a new video we’re
also working on our patreon Drive when we’re trying to get 70 patrons so go to our solos number 10
fury this groupie song tells the story of a
man who reaches for fame and loses his way scorning his woman in the process
it’s got a lot of great guitar on it but the guitar solo itself blows me away
every time it’s backed by the imagery in my mind of prince on stage performing in
his deepest red suit with the twins dancing around him great solo to start
the list off number 9 I’m yours off of prince’s debut album for you comes
the album closer called I’m yours even in his beginning years
Prince rivals some of the best guitar players in the land and this track shows
off that mastery not only does the opening riff come crashing in but Prince
goes on for about two minutes long in this song coming in and out and
escalating each time making this a really awesome guitar solo number eight
Alexa de par yi yes Alexa de puddy a b-side from 1986 is
pretty much one long instrumental showing of prince’s guitar chops mixed
with some orchestral risings and really amazing keyboards his guitar work is
great throughout but there’s a piece of the song about 3/4 of the way through
where he amplifies the energy and it really just sings I’m calling that the
number 8 best guitar solo on this list really great stuff
number 7 morning papers Moin papers is a great example of how
Prince used horns to elevate his songs and dueling sacks and guitar on this
track are pretty great his morning papers guitar solo has become a staple
of his arsenal of amazing guitar shredding accentuated by creative use of
all of the horns on the track he did a lot of guitar work on 1992’s love symbol
album and this was probably the best display of his talent that year number
six everlasting now the everlasting now appears on this list not only because
the guitar so is executed much differently than the others in his
career but also because he injects humor on top of it instead of the reverb of
his other rock guitar solos the everlasting now instead has a sly funk
guitar and then at the end there’s someone on there who says I wish he’d
just play like he used to and in response Prince slaps them that’s the
perfect response to that sort of thing number five I can never take the place
of your man while the version if I could never take
the place of your man is wonderful on the studio release of sign at the times
I’m specifically calling out the version of this song from the sign of the times
concert movie it’s driven by Sheila E on drums and is a tad faster in tempo which
makes it that much more electric the dueling guitar and keyboards solo
and the breakdown portion at the end of the song elevate this track to
theatrical levels and made it one of my favorite songs just in general for a
very long time number four dreamer prince Bulow’s the guitar out of the
water on this powerful showing not only a dreamer itself terrifyingly political
but it points out much of what it’s like to be black in the United States and is
backed by expert level drums played by Corey Coleman Dunham there’s actually
two major solos on this but I’m calling out the first one in the middle of the
song as the best for dreamer it is just so good number three the ride prince’s premier blues song was
obviously going to include some amazing guitar work on it featured on 1997’s
crystal ball this amazing track delivers guitar shredding on a level never seen
before there are three separate solos maybe even more but they all blend
together seamlessly which makes it hard to choose which is kind of the best it
gets the number three slot for all of the greatness that it contains number
two let’s go crazy everyone knows let’s go crazy from 1984
s Purple Rain and the ending of this song is the stuff that can turn a person
into a lifelong prince friend in a heartbeat
even though it was at the beginning of Purple Rain I’m sure it was the reason
why so many people walked out of the theater happy after watching the movie
the way he executes the guitar solo at the end is so powerful and electric and
ending with take me away just delivers this message with a rush of adrenaline
amazing solo but there’s one that I feel is just a tad better number one gold the song gold from 1995 the gold
experience is an amazing song of faith and the power of belief and takes the
number one spot for guitar solos mostly due to the technique Prince uses to
amplify the solo itself gold starts off amazingly enough with a normal structure
and then starts to die down as if it’s going into the end of the song then he
counts down in an amazing way one two one two three and then bursts onto the
song delivering one of the best guitar solos of his entire career carrying so
much emotion and power within it and once you hear it you know that you are
now a member of the new power generation so that was my top 10 list of Prince
guitar solos let me know what you guys think down in the comments what songs do
you think should have been on here that maybe I didn’t mention would you
rearrange any of the orders let me know also don’t forget to follow us on social
media it’s at Prince’s friend YT on all the major platforms we’re mostly on
Facebook Twitter and Instagram as I mentioned before check out the patreon
at and otherwise may live to see the dawn see
you in the next video

I like your all on you list. I really enjoy watching him play "The Ride". I could see how he made some of the sounds I heard pulling all the strings together and he was so fast and complete on the notes like on a piano. Great review.๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’œ

there's two that I can think of sir that u missed The Question of U, and the live performance of the song Motherless Child from 2000. Also what about Computer Blue?

YeS, gold is a tear jerker!

  • Reply Adorecream 1976 April 13, 2019 at 6:53 am

Your choices are great, agree with Gold be the #1 as that guitar just really takes flight, reminds me of a space shuttle popping off a jet at a cruising altitude into space! Also ICNTTPOYM – I mean wow and on the album version as well, when it ends and he does the Scream. Add ons – The Holy River (Thats a given), Get it up ( i know its Time, but Prince added those guitar solos to befuddle Jesse Johnson). I wanna be your lover extended. Days of Wild, Another Love, Computer Blue (The whole song!!!!) and Thunder – just awesome.
It always surprises me when non fans are amazed he plays guitar. I mean its not even like he justs strums chords, he was one of the greatest guitarists of all time, in a league with Jimi Hendrix, Clapton, Santana and Satriani. Once again thanx man and love that wall!
Meanwhile my chart analysis of 1999 goes unloved – oh well!

  • Reply Xavier Jackson April 13, 2019 at 7:26 am

Nice list, but man, Why you wanna Trear me so bad and Purple rain don't at least get an honorable mention? Lol the title track is just as great as closer as Let's go crazy an opener. Still though, great work as usual, my friend.

  • Reply Modern Aire April 13, 2019 at 9:47 am

Oh Alexa De Paris… that song is amazing. One of my all time favorite Prince songs. However, I sometimes think it may be Wendy doing the solo! But yeah, it's Prince! I think by that time, Prince had started a sound and guitar approach that you would here into the SOTT/Lovesexy/Rave89, Nude, eras. By The Undertaker he'd move into a new guitar solo, almost a little over processed.ย

Morning Papers is a great one. Never Take oh my god! And how he dances in the guitar solo in SOTT? Wonderful AND magical!ย

Everlasting now? Fury? Awful. In my view. Dreamer? That's a good post JW era guitar solo, but I don't understand the anti-Americanism that's extracted from that song. Hm. A topic for another time maybe.ย

Where's the Undertaker! Woa, I'm Yours, I need to take a close listen to that! Totally forgot! Classic Prince! Where's 'Just My Imagination', a soul wrenching solo… Gold is great! He was jus so positive in that song and it translated into such a musical solo…. that reminds me, 'I Hate U'!

Another greatest guitar solo is the Dear Michealangelo guitar solo. It's almost indescribable. You hear it even more so in the Prince version of the song, and Prince thought so highly of that one he used it again in the Scandalous Sex Suite! The Cross SOTT film! Play In The Sunshine MTV Awards '87! Live video of 'Live 4 Love' guitar solo… the hoping down stage platforms with each note, does it to me everytime, stunning guitar solo!

And probably THE greatest guitar solo ever… wait for it… Nude Tour Purple Rain… you know the one!

Another solid list, my friend. What do you think of mine?

    10. When Doves Cry (Purple Rain, 1984)
    09. Dreamer (Lotusflow3r, 2009)
    08. Bambi (Prince, 1979)
    07. I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man (Sign Oโ€™ the Times, 1987)
    06. Shhh (The Gold Experience, 1995)
    05. Letโ€™s Go Crazy (Purple Rain, 1984)
    04. Joy in Repetition (One Nite Alone… Live, 2002)
    03. Just My Imagination (Small Club, 1988)
    02. While My Guitar Gently Weeps (Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, 2004)
    01. Purple Rain (NFL Super Bowl Halftime Show, 2007)

  • Reply Mel smith April 13, 2019 at 11:00 am

The highest praise Iโ€™ve ever heard for Prince was from a guitarist, (A very talented guy and a musical friend.)
He was very VERY picky about his musicians. His thought on Eddie Van Halen was โ€œThe only lick of Eddieโ€™s Iโ€™d ever want to do is Valerie Bertinelliโ€. The man was RUTHLESS.
The first time he saw Prince on TV his remark was, โ€œI turned on the TV last night and saw a guy named Prince. I donโ€™t care for his music much but he may just be Hendrix reincarnated.โ€

Thanks for this Prince Friend, a real pleasure to watch. I'm a sucker for a Rock guitar solo. I really loved your list, some great songs that you put in your playlist. It's really tough to narrow down a list with Prince' extensive catalogue of genius, creativity and outstanding music recordings. Songs that I would probably be looking at would include: 'She's Always In My Hair', 'Dolphin', 'Shhh', 'Endorphin Machine' (I guess 'The Gold Experience' album is just incredible), 'Last December', 'Calhoun Square', 'Interactive', 'Peach'…

The Purple Rain solo will always be my fav. Simply because that's where i hoped on the Prince ride when i was ten in 84. And just was mesmerized by the music that was coming out of my parents stereo.

  • Reply Moviestar April 14, 2019 at 1:25 pm

The opening of When Doves Cry is still one of my favorite guitar solos from any artist. I always wondered how Prince came up with this idea. One day I heard Louis Armstrong – West End Blues 1928. I thought, wow could this be the inspiration for the opening of When Doves Cry. Then I read an interview in the 80's with a description of a jukebox Prince had and Louis Armstrong was in the jukebox, so who knows'. Maybe great musical minds think alike:)

The way the solo comes in on Fury is stunning. Also, once again, putting Boss effects pedals through their paces, proving that you donโ€™t need to spend unnecessary money on expensive boutique pedals! ๐Ÿ’œ

Thank you 4 the list. Itโ€™s very interesting to see a list from a real Princefan.
Itโ€™s so difficult to make a top ten guitsrsolo list. Prince used the guitar as a solo instrument, as a small detail in a song, as a rhtym part, for very melodic parts and unique licks.
He used crazy sounds and was very very creative with this instrument. A lot of people didnโ€™t recognize this.
The solo in the song โ€žitโ€œ is just so minimalistic and he played it at a the best moment for the song.
He doubled the intro from the solo with his vocals. Did u ever hear this?
The guitar work in the song Lovesexy is so funky and creative.
This is the problem that people think he didnโ€™t play so many hero solos. He took the guitar and made it a very important part for a song.
    He was a guitar genius.

  • Reply Gabbie F. April 17, 2019 at 1:40 am

Scintillating review and idea: hard to rank too btw ~ I would say "feel u up" segue from lovesexy rehearsal (bootleg soundcheck,) "What did I do" (live boot,) and on same year of 1988 "Just my imagination" (small club) and solos of course on live "Anna Stesia" and "The Cross." In studio unofficial releases: "Wally," "Yo Mister," "Adonis and Bathesheba." There are so many gems over this legendary career from "Rainbow Children" (title track,) to "Vicki Waiting"…thank you for amazing channel. ๐Ÿ™

there is a particular piece of jewelry Prince wore in concert and photos. My family is a fan of the Purple Yoda and I am interested in finding out about that necklace. I want just to know did he purchase it in another country, was it a gift or did someone make it as a craft project ?ย I think it should be on display in the Paisley Park tour or My Name is Prince Expedition. [email protected] is my email if anyone has some information. I think maybe Princes Friend Channel may know !ย Thanks in advance and I love your You Tube Channel videos. I am subscribed already.

  • Reply Wonders April 17, 2019 at 8:02 pm

Is Alexa De Paris really a "solo"…? I'd just call that instrumentation…for want of a more clever sounding word. I mean the entire track is instrumentation, so I don't think you could accurately say it breaks for any kind of solo. As for The Ride one, I'm quite sure you've heard the King's Cross aftershow version. That was WAY better than the one featured on Crystal Ball. My comments are always too late to be revelant I'm sorry. Time is short!!
