Starpoint Music Program

January 18, 2020

Everything that we try to do is to build the
creative spirit so however we do it. We do it a lot through music and in this case
today what we were doing is song creation. With the intermediate students we try to create
songs for their winter concert and the spring concert and that’s what you were seeing today
is you’re getting an opportunity to see the kids record with a practicing producer getting
the opportunity to record in a studio. Starpoint school was the studio today. We like to use a lot of cross-curricular ideas
so it’s not just about music but using the math that they learn and the sciences, the
social studies aspects, language. This is our 5th year here at Starpoint and
we have seen immense changes in their rhythmic abilities. Now they’re actually playing the instruments,
coming up with the ideas, giving executive input so that’s just some really cool things
to see. Every single music session, we have two sessions
a week, they bring in the rhythm clock. On the back we have all the different shapes,
the names, the colors, the fractions, the symbols, the notes, so he’s taking it from
music, melody, to geometry to fractions to decimals to percents and so what they do is
he starts out every time with rhythmic vocabulary. He works on different rhythms and they’re
transcribing. On the back you have a percent of your whole,
and then the rest and 90 degrees. It’s not “I’m gonna teach you a song here’s
the song let’s try to read music,” it’s how do you use music across the board in every
single curriculum.
