Shock Encounter With A Shark | Ross Edgley’s Great British Swim: E14

September 1, 2019

[Music] [Music] [Music] so guys after 80 something days I can finally say that we are staring cake rough in the face for those who don’t know that is the top of the country and it feels just amazing to even say that we’re missing a tide today which is rare but also really nice the weather out there is so bad if we went and tried to swim against the tides and the wind and the waves I basically wouldn’t move anywhere so that’s given me the evening off and it sounds strange but I just I just wanted to get snug and I know I’m wearing a coat in bed but I mind I’m sweating a little bit it’s the first time in 80 something days well I’m actually warm and I’m sweating and it’s a luxury but the other thing I wanted to do was a little bit of homework I wanted to sit down look at past swim records and really take stock just because everything we’ve learned up until this point is now irrelevant and that’s because the top of Scotland is it’s just a different beast the waves are different that the temperature is definitely different but the most disheartening thing for me is my speed through the water even that’s different and obviously there’s many factors at play and whether it’s the waves the tides obviously my swimming speed wherever I’m feeling fatigued whether my shoulders are happy with me or sad with me today and but just to give you an idea it was literally a few weeks ago we were gonna pass the honor sky and we set a great British swim speed record Tan’s is gonna make this official GPS had GPS so when the time is right boob and we ready so we got a mile got a bus probably about a half an hour rather be cruising just get nice and warm my seat has and then they complain to sprint and I’m gonna be keeping pace next and monitoring the speedometer and noting down the speed leave my bubbles hat definitely gonna stay on I’m gonna give you a headache ah eat five bubbles let’s do it yeah 3.7 yeah coming down this leg boy weak [Music] hey if you actually look at the progress from my past to swims I mean I’m struggling to make to not I’m really crawling up to the top of Scotland and obviously that’s not good from a strategic point of view because if we don’t get round the top before the winter weather sets in it’s bad news just mentally as well I mean I I thought once we came into Scotland I’d be cruising around the top my beard would be glistening in the Sun saltwater spray everywhere it’s just not happening it’s I am limping like an injured seal just around the top of Kate Roth and we just work loring miles everything we’ve learned has changed it’s no longer two tides a day like clockwork now it’s just like a game of hide-and-seek and and we’re not winning the plan for tonight is homework also as well central your packing away the calories which is why I have a shopping bag for the jelly babies carb-load hydrate also as well as well as the calories as well as the carbs making sure I’m actually taking care of my immune system as well which is why I’m eating anything and everything that is packed with vitamins minerals phytochemicals enzymes anything I can find from the protein works including super green shakes I’m almost I’m like a like a injured feral dog waiting and when the gate opens [Music] the anticipation that coming to this area has been really mixed when you get up into the wilds of Scotland up here it’s really remote you know there’s nothing up here really other than mountains very gnarly Anchorage’s it’s completely exposed to the North Atlantic and in this area particularly around Cape Ross you’re getting away from the shelter of the islands here the Inner Hebrides and out into a zone where you’ve got hundreds actually thousands of miles of ocean earlier in the great British when we had this situation where we could easily go as two times today the weather weather is relatively good let’s go whatever because we know we’ve got somewhere to escape to or it’s calm enough that we can be at sea in evening to it seeing not worrying about it and one of the big differences in the Kate Roth area is that we’re not just looking at putting Ross in whenever he can swim we’re also looking at where are we going to end that swim and is it safe for the boat and crew and Ross to be there [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] sup guys today swim took an interesting turn just because I thought I’d seen everything there was to see around the Great British coast minke whales dolphins different kinds of dolphins different kinds of jellyfish but today Scotland decided to spring a little bit of the surprise on me I say little it was a giant basking shark just boom big belly massive mouth just going about its business I’m still not entirely sure how I feel about sharing the swimming pool with a basking shark the Great British swim is far from over and it’s still gonna spring up so many surprises killer whales Walker’s I wouldn’t be upset if I got all the way back to Margate and didn’t see an orca if I saw it from the boat if I had a hot chocolate that’d be different I’ve been researching it I spoke to many marine biologists and experts what might happen is they might mistake you for a seal that’s the problem when I have my mask on I do look like a seal so I’m trying not to swim like a seal I kind of swim so an Walker probably takes a look at me and knows that’s not a seal that is that’s a strangely shaped swimmer but it’s not seal and he probably doesn’t taste great and that’s that’s my best line of defense right now it’s the killer whales that I’m not I’m not comfortable with at the moment but honor the local fishermen as well and said they’ve seen quite a few and I saw a tweet the other day I think it was a marine conservation Twitter page and he said that a famous old killer whale have been seen just down here I’m just I’m trying what I’m doing I’m thinking my best line of defense is I’m just trying to make myself look as unappetizing as possible and like the beard you know I haven’t showered in in 82 days I can’t imagine anything in the sea is looking at me going I’ll order one of those main course up on that but overall the wildlife so far has been good I just hope my relationship with it stays like that that’s all I want I just want to get to Margate still living in harmony with the sea life thank you guys that’s it about to get ready for what could be the final swim or the wild wild west there is no Scott Lowe genuinely a bit nervous about this one I’m not even gonna lie just hoping that we can sneak around just before mama nature decides to throw a massive storm our way taper off so things cross touch wood this is the last vlog I’ll be making as I’m going north and next time we speak also don’t forget you can track my progress at breadboard co-taught UK / great Bruce whim but for now I’ve got su up it’s time to get to work

I would love to see a video where you explain how you record your swims in the sense of how your team knows where to drop you of and just the general routine of the sailing

Great work, amazing inspiration thank you. I watch a lot sailing videos and they all say sharks are normally just curious and will say hello, SV DELOS videos they're all divers and watch them dive with sharks on a weekly bases the one thing they do say is not to freak out when you're in the water with them as they sense the elevated heart beat of fear and so to keep calm on carry on.

  • Reply Fendt1237 August 30, 2018 at 6:17 pm

  • Reply Bram Jansen August 30, 2018 at 6:41 pm

will the boat anchor when you stop swimming?

  • Reply GOTHICforLIFE1 August 30, 2018 at 6:48 pm

Can i ask how things work in the interval where you sleep? Does the boat still keep running? Do you anchor it somewhere? Just curious as to how you measure swim vs boat travel (Not taking anything away from this massive swim) I'm just curious about the technical parts behind it :D?

  • Reply MightyMermaid August 30, 2018 at 8:10 pm

Wow, that was close with the shark. I guess there have been even more around which you didn't see ^^

As far as the whales a concerned, I've heard a story of a diver who saw two huge whales swim towards him. He said he was thinking if they don't see him or make sudden movements that would be it… But they noticed him and just swam peacefully around him! One on the left and one on the right. Maybe this story helps to feel safe. I hope they'll be as friendly with you as they were with him 🙂

So stay safe and keep swimming 😀 I love to see your videos every week.

    Best wishes from Germany 🙂

  • Reply Samuli Henriksson September 2, 2018 at 10:08 am

No recorded cases of orcas attacking humans in the wild ever. Also orcas are not just beasts working on instincts but intelligent creatures that have been thought to have something of a culture even. All family groups have their own dialects and they can learn from each other and nail something like killing a great white with ease without having ever been face to face with one. All I'm trying to say is, the possible orcas on your route are very likely not going to mistake you for a seal. You are a great inspiration and I'm wishing all the best for your adventure around Great Britain!
