Congrats you’ve done great, I used to love playing the piano in high school. I didn’t play it for very long but this makes me want to get lessons.

Ps. I used to watch and lust over you years ago … you’ve gotten even finer in your old age haha! 😂

Omigod your giving me nightmares from my childhood…piano recitals were pure torture as a child. My heart is pounding for no god damn reason…

  • Reply Karyn Peterson February 19, 2020 at 7:55 pm

I loved this. The first video of yours that my mom ever watched with me! By the end we were both so proud! Ya did great, kid!

  • Reply SueAlex Wright February 19, 2020 at 7:56 pm

This makes me miss piano so much 😭 I haven’t played seriously since my senior recital in 2015 but one of my 2020 resolutions has been to sit down at a piano and get at least some of my repertoire back, particularly the Beethoven sonata and Joplin pieces I learned

  • Reply Dermatillomaniac February 19, 2020 at 8:10 pm

This is so inspiring! As kids, we're allowed to do things for fun and work on improving. Seems like once you're an adult, you can only do things you're already good at. Fear of failure kills more dreams than failure itself. So proud of you, Tyler!!

  • Reply Sanaa The Great February 19, 2020 at 8:36 pm

I know exactly how you feel. I have to play a 20 minute sonata next month D:

  • Reply Peter Hontaru - Piano Progress February 19, 2020 at 8:39 pm

Wow, great to see you’ve taken up lessons and already going for recitals! I also started two years ago and did a few recitals last year which I think were key to my development. Great to see it went well (well done on playing from memory too!!!) and that you went past this hurdle. More to come?

  • Reply Signe Rohi February 19, 2020 at 9:12 pm

I like seeing people taking classical piano lessons seriously ❤️ and you did so great Tyler!! You should keep taking piano lessons

  • Reply Paige Del February 19, 2020 at 9:45 pm

I feel so proud of you for taking the initiative to learn an instrument and doing the recital. It takes bravery to be vulnerable and is awesome to not focus on perfection! I'm learning the ukulele and I felt such imposter syndrome at the beginning and I can only play riptide but it's so nice and a fun little challenge!

  • Reply grachi sol February 19, 2020 at 9:55 pm

This made me smile. You did great Tyler.

  • Reply Michael Lasfetto February 20, 2020 at 4:57 am

I was most impressed by how you recovered from your memory slips at the end. Concentrating that much for that long when you probably haven't yet learned all the theory behind the chord structure of Bach's C Major prelude yet, which helps with knowing what is probably next and what order the notes are in (chord voicing), is hard–especially when you're nervous and are playing on an unfamiliar piano in an unfamiliar room. You kept going and you tastefully played notes that were in the chord, and the only people who would know that you deviated from the page are the people who have played it before (or are Bach nerds). Any serious performer would tell you that that kind of quick thinking is what separates good performers from great performers. "Mistakes" are inevitable; it's how you recover from them that matters.

Omg! I haven't even finished the video yet… I had the same kinda goal 5 years ago after a very awful breakup. He is a very accomplished musician. At one conversation he said "just pick up an instrument and learn." He didn't mean it in a nice way… Flash forward, I now play 8 instruments. (Not all perfectly.) My biggest goal was to perform at an open mic. I have done it. It's one of my biggest personal accomplishments. Good for you! It's not easy to just perform. Learning an instrument is like learning a new language. Good job on sticking to your goals!

  • Reply Perpetually Sleepy February 20, 2020 at 7:31 am

Me: I should learn an instrument
Piano: exists in a place I see everyday
Also me: uses it as a table for stuffed plushies to sit on

Damn! So proud of you!! I did piano for 10 years from elementary school to high school and I can honestly say that I'm impressed with what you've accomplished in a year. I remember recitals were always the MOST nerve wracking things to do. My teacher would have us pick named out of a bowl and I would dread being last because of the building anxiety. You did so well and kept your cool while playing. GOOD JOB!!!! <3

  • Reply thetimetravler February 21, 2020 at 3:23 am

Tyler that is really good for the time you have been taking lessons. I took lessons for 6 years and enjoy playing, rather for friends or myself at home. Bach is good starter for classical. I enjoy Dustin O'halloran's music, hes had featured music in some movies one being Marie Antoinette a few years ago. They are calming but peaceful pieces. Here is the one I am currently learning. Hope you continue to improve in your music and playing! (link below)

  • Reply Luke White February 21, 2020 at 4:29 am

I stopped playing when I went to college last year after 10 years, this made me wanna practice something ahah.

  • Reply Devin Bartlett February 21, 2020 at 4:38 am

I'm a Music Education Student in college. I'm a sophomore this year, and all music majors have to learn piano. When you started playing I got flash backs. This was one of the solos i have to do for my piano final freshman year. It's crazy the improvements people can make in such a short time. I hope you keep it up and maybe even learn another instrument. Such a good performance! Yay! It's never to late to learn how to play an instrument.

Way to go! What a great message

  • Reply Melissa February 21, 2020 at 3:23 pm

That was beautiful!! Great attention to dynamics. The rhythm/tone is an easy fix if you pick up your fingers, esp. in your right hand. Relax and let gravity do the work, particularly in the forte bits. Think of them as the little piano hammers just dropping down from the same height, and you'll have an easier time…keeping even time. Physics, man. I know it's scary to let your fingers leave the safety of the keys, but your sound will be better if you do it. If you hit a couple wrong notes along the way, at least they'll have a pleasanter tone.

How do I know so much about this, you wonder? WELL I've been playing for over 2 decades, and I have the SAME tendency to tense/cling to the keys. 😀 I also disagree on the memorizing front; if no music resulted in making you tense up more/poorer-quality tone, then use the music as a mental safety net!

  • Reply Katie Sewell February 21, 2020 at 3:50 pm

Well done Tyler! So inspiring! I wasn’t expecting you to do it from memory 😱

I loved this video but I was just wondering if you got the parents permission to film their children and then upload it? I'm sure you didn't have bad intentions but some parents don't agree with their children being filmed at such a young age:(

  • Reply Jennifer B. February 22, 2020 at 6:39 am

Yay! Good job. I feel like you could've done even better had they/you lowered the bench which makes your arm, hand and wrist positions very different from what you should be used to. It was raised for the children, so not the right height for you!

  • Reply infinite43 February 22, 2020 at 7:04 am

keep playing tyler. You've come really far from just starting out. Piano is a great instrument for learning how to read music and to understand it. Keep playing. there's also a lot of phone apps and stuff that can help you. metronome apps especially so that you get the timing right and you stay at the same tempo (i tend to speed up without meaning to). GREAT JOB! BRAVO!

Tyler! Congratulations! I’m proud of you. And I’m humbled by your performance. I’ve been a classically trained musician for 20 years now (I think we’re the same age 30?). I am proud of you because you put effort into something that is difficult. It takes a lot of skill and preparation to be a classical musician and you didn’t let that discourage you! And, performing in a recital is always nerve racking! I hope you continue to build upon your newfound skills. Keep up the wonderful progress! Amazing!

Congrats Tyler!! I'm doing my doctorate in cello performance right now and I'd say after 1 year of lessons you're in a great spot! You memorized the piece, implemented dynamics that followed the harmony, and made it through without stopping! Those are great places to be at when learning a musical instrument! Hope you continue to take lessons and enjoy the process!
