Limelight – RUSH – Guitar Lesson

November 17, 2019

Hi, I’m Bobby crispy this video is part of my guitar lesson series So today, I’ll show how to play limelight by rush So I’ll play the rest first then I’ll show how to play 1004 out using tabs [okay], I have six riffs and song okay. Here’s riff number one Okay, so that’s top string open for threat fifth string open fourth fret fourth string second fret Then [this] string second fret B. Power chord twice top string fourth fret Fifth string open eight power work mmM. Let’s get slowly That’s played three and a half times actually I Love these riffs and the song are played in half’s like two and a half three and a half I’ll show the song structure at the end of the song [into] the last video Okay Riff number two is this and okay, just be power-chord fifth string second fret a fifth string open power chord Twice E power Cord top string open once and top string second fret fourth fifth string open fourth open once again slowly Okay, so it’s riff number two riff number. Three is this Okay, okay b. Power chord [fifth] string second fret bottom string open second strangle [an] [A-Flat] [power] [cord] top string fourth fret twice stop the F-Sharp power Cord top string second fret so three times their Top string open e our core. What’s in the bottom two strings? F-Sharp Power chord twice top string 2nd fret top string 2nd fret 4th open the bottom two [strings] bottom string That’s another riff. That’s played Once and a half so actually the whole riff through if you include the half it goes like this Okay, next riff riff number four is this You actually sound better with their distortion Okay, anyways, it’s like a b power chord fifth string second fret So it’s a fifth string second fret fourth string fourth fret third string fourth fret [youth] the pinkie they’re deaf string open fourth string second fret Third string fourth [fret] top string open second fourth fifth string open fourth fret So once again slowly Okay rough number five The apes’ [oh] and some like this okay, so you bar it at the fourth string throughout the fourth fret and Play The Fifth String 6 fret Play the four starting at the top Splay down And play the third string six, right? top stirring open 5th string 2nd fret 4th string the second fret [3rd] string [3rd] fret second string open third string so sixth fifth fourth second searchers At same picking Pattern for the next part would you play? top string second fret fourth string sorry fifth string fourth fret fourth string fourth fret third string third fret and second string open so it’s Okay, so I’ll play against Olli That’s another riff that’s played, and I just played two and a third time Okay riff number six it’s almost the same thing because you’re edgy o’s but they played his chords, so it’s So it’s a power chord. That’s your power cord then same as before borrowed the fourth frets on all the strings tops [5th] string 6 fret 3rd string 6 fret And full e out fully for all strings same Pattern as before top string second fret fifth string fourth fret fourth string fourth fret third string third fret then bottom two strings open and back to this g sharp chord after that short And that’s pretty much it Yeah, and the last chord the song is the G sharp chord More or less Okay, so here’s a song structure here you know You play the riffs and sort of play half of the riffs as you go through. It’s kind of complicated But that’s about as simple as I can make it Okay, well that’s a lesson. I hope it’s been helpful and thanks for watching

I don't normally post comments on YouTube but I had to take the time to say THANK YOU for demystifying one of my favorite Rush tunes. I'm not a very advanced player and I've tried playing this song before using only tabs but I just couldn't get it down. Seeing you break it down riff by riff was excellent. Keep up the outstanding work!

  • Reply SnowyCamel November 8, 2012 at 3:34 am

hey bobby could you please upload the full tabs onto your website?

  • Reply SnowyCamel November 8, 2012 at 3:34 am

  • Reply catapei December 25, 2012 at 3:35 am

btw the song is not exactly like this… search for alex lifeson limelight lesson preview and u ll c what i m talking about :)))

  • Reply aurosne January 7, 2013 at 3:56 pm

Alex's hold the pinky down for the B on the G string after moving from the B power chord to the A power chord. It is very noticeable after playing it the proper way.

  • Reply catapei January 7, 2013 at 6:23 pm

yea that's right. but it's not what i c u doing. u go from the B chord to the A chord and then to the E chord. but u don't keep the B note, with ur pinky, on the G string. that note continues there during the 3 chords progression.

  • Reply catapei January 7, 2013 at 6:24 pm

i m sorry. i thought u were the owner of the video. pay attention in what i m saying. u said it right. but he doesn't do that way.

Good to see a great lesson for rush. Could you please do cortez the killer especially the solos hard to find one thanks

  • Reply markyncole April 28, 2013 at 11:29 pm

Thank you! Great lesson,no unnecessary long winded talking. That's the one thing I can't stand about most of the lessons on youtube, too much talking and not enough playing. You know the chords and TABS and you get right to the point without wasting time in between chords. Not a fan of TABS though,IMO if you're going to take the time to learn TABS than you might as well just learn the proper chords it takes just as much time. You made learning this song easy, keep up the go!od work

  • Reply jade west August 9, 2013 at 10:33 pm

I know u just did the godfather theme but can u do it the same way like slash that would be soooo cool *0* and if u could put the tabs with it…

  • Reply TTBlueMetal August 11, 2013 at 4:42 am

I used to play it like you, but after watching Alex Liefson show the proper way, it's the same chords, except he plays the B note on the G string with both the A and E chords, and you can really tell the difference. It's subtle but after seeing him show how to play HIS tune it sounds so much better.
Thanks for your lessons though. It's awesome that people like you take the time to show others how to play songs.

  • Reply EvolveDrumNBass September 12, 2013 at 6:46 am

Good job. Usually if your calling one chord a sharp then the others are called sharp too. So it's G sharp not A flat

  • Reply HRRoach September 22, 2017 at 3:51 am

i notice people saying it is wrong but not saying what is wrong about it… sounds right to me… there are many positions the notes can be played so if it is the right notes how can anyone say its wrong oh well the tab is wrong for sure at 2:20 but that is not what is being played

  • Reply rooftopcindy November 27, 2017 at 3:09 pm

Thanks for the time you took to post this lesson. Don't worry about the haters who think they can play guitar but can't even type a proper sentence. Take any basic lesson and open up your own "tool bag" and play it however you need to hear it.Keep up the productive work and "F" the angry key board guitar players going nowhere, playing great guitar to themselves.

  • Reply Flying High March 20, 2018 at 8:24 pm

It is not wrong; it is just his adaptation. You don't have to march goose step to everything another guitar player is doing. That's like a mindless robot.
