How to use Nitrous without BLOWING up your engine Innovate PSN-1 PSN1 3893 – Real Street Performance

August 27, 2019

So you’ve been wanting the quick and easy power from nitrous, but you’re worried about blowing your engine up. Well today, we’re going to talk about a product that’ll keep you safe while using nitrous. Let’s check it out. You can really start to get into trouble if your engine leans out while you’re spraying nitrous. It would be great if you could just shut the nitrous off as soon as the engine starts to lean out. Well Innovate came out with a gauge controller that does exactly that. It’s a gauge controller with 3 inputs that control 1 output. The inputs are air/fuel ratio, RPM and nitrous bottle pressure. The output allows power to go to the nitrous control solenoid or not. The quick explanation of this is, if your engine leans out it doesn’t allow the nitrous to turn on or it shuts it off. If the bottle pressure is too low, it doesn’t allow the nitrous to turn on. But if all of those things are okay, the nitrous acts as usual. When you open the box, you’ll see the gauge and the gauge wiring. There’s a black face and a white face with a black or a silver bezel. So you can make any combination of those that you want. It comes with the relay for electrical power. It has a weld-on bung for the O2 sensor. A serial cable for programming through the computer even though you don’t have to hook it up to a computer to program it. The pressure sensor for the bottle along with its wiring, and the O2 sensor with its wiring. It uses the same great, digital wideband technology that all of the other Innovate wide bands come with. It has a Bosch 4.9 LSU sensor. So you can use it with unleaded or leaded gasoline, diesel or ethanol like E85. The gauge can display in multiple units. Bottle pressure can be displayed in PSI, bar, inches of Mercury, or kilopascals. And the wideband can display in AFR or Lambda. It’s a common 52 millimeter sized gauge. So it should fit in most common gauge pods. So I mean we’ve all been there. You want to use nitrous, but you’re worried about it. I mean it can really hurt things if you don’t do it right. So you want the cheap and easy power. I mean you really can’t get that much power from anything else for much money. So it’s extremely attractive. But at the same time you’re stressing. You’re like “wow man I just put all this money into my build and I really don’t want to blow it.” So if there was a product like this. I mean it would almost make it a no-brainer to use the nitrous because you don’t have to lose any sleep over if something’s going to go wrong or anything like that. It literally turns the nitrous off. So the way that it works is you put the included relay between the nitrous control Solenoid and its power source. You set the air/fuel ratio limit on the gauge. And you set the minimum bottle pressure limit on the gauge. If either of these conditions become exceeded, then it flips the relay and doesn’t allow the power to go to the nitrous control solenoid. If everything’s going fine, it allows power to pass through to the solenoid like usual. So this product really takes a lot of the stress and nervousness out of using nitrous. You get to have the fun, cheap easy power from the nitrous without having to lose any sleep over if you’re going to blow up your engine that you just dumped all this money into. So it’s a really nice comfort feature that allows you – it’s a safety blanket. You know it’s something that everybody who’s using nitrous should have something like this. If you don’t have an expensive standalone ECU or something that can do these features, you can do it the inexpensive route with a gauge controller like this. So if you have any nitrous questions, if you’re just starting with nitrous or if you’ve been using it and you just like to make your setup better, please feel free to contact us for free advice. If you have any questions, you can post them in the comments below. Please like and subscribe for more videos next week.

this product is useless. why? because if your bottle pressure is too small then who cares? it will RICH out and not lean out. also, if it leans out it turns off? hu? the only way it will lean out is if the wet nos fuel injector faults … and that happens? NO! that actually never happens …. and if you've got good pressure and good a/f and you stick in a 250 shot guess what? Boom! your little "safety gauge" didn't do shit.

oh, and it's like 400 bucks! super rip off … you know THEIR costs is $75 … total gyp

thanks for the video. I am running a Nissan 350z stock & am looking to increase the power & as you mentioned No2 is the cheapest way to get a large amount of HP for very little. I am however, worried about blowing my engine. Would you say that using a gauge like this would make it safe to run the No2 kit without changing the internals?

I had Nitrous fitted to my Clio 172 Sport. The fitter managed to mangle my engine and swore blind he never used the gas at all. I had owned the car for 4 years and was happy to give it a good send off but would have been nice to use it if only once.
So scrapped the Clio, stripped the Nitrous kit out and put it in the shed and got myself a 111R. Now, how many of you would feel ok fitting NOS to a £20k Elise after the Clio melted? I'm tempted but at what point does sense take over our need for extra bhp?

  • Reply chris keiley October 2, 2016 at 11:36 pm

its a good idea but in theory the wide band will detect the lean condition after the engine has gone lean, i think its a good solution for shutting it down sooner but then again the damage could be done by the time the lean condition hits the wide band

Here is a question that I need someone that knows, not a guess. I have a 2008 Dodge Challenger SRT that been rebuilt to a 6.3l stroker HEMI with Forge internals, that has a 298ci SMS Supercharger (Running 12psi) that has been Dyno at 744rwhp and 703 torque. I would love to see a little more boost and my gears are stock now, 3:06.1 and will be changing to 3:73.1 (chrome-moly) and want a NOS kit added. Do you think that my motor will hold a 200 shot of NOS without killing the motor, trans or rear end?

  • Reply Renato Sacchetti December 16, 2017 at 2:32 pm

I'm interested how it would work on diesel as it doesn't show egt what would be a good afr readying meaning safe with the nitrous

  • Reply Wayne Bollentin December 19, 2017 at 9:37 pm

This isn't going to stop the motor from detonation which is the #1 cause of motor failures with nos. If you have a knock senser and think thats going to save you, your wrong. Senser doesn't act fast enough damage will already done. Nothing will save you from nos when shit hits the fan like when a solenoid sticks open. This is a false sense of security. Best thing is to learn and really understand Nos before you fuck with it. Remember NOS doesn't kill motors people do and like anything in life sometime shit just happens.

My old stock 5.0 Mustang lasted a year and a half spraying a NX wet 250 shot before it finally blew a head gasket and also broke a valve guide. I fixed it and it kept going for another few months before I finally bought a new dss 331 for it and some afr 185’s. I used to do it often also filling the bottle 1-2 times a week but I did have plenty of nitrous backfires (that’s what caused the head gasket to go) and the heads were studded too. I think most stock small block engines can handle it as long as you have it engaged by a full throttle switch and you have some good head studs also.

I would like to share two very important quotes with you that i try to share with as many people as i can. Jesus said “if you do not repent (turn away from sin: lying, stealing, getting drunk or high, pre-marital sex, adultery, hate, murder, suicide, witchcraft, homosexuality, using God's name in vain, praying to statues/pictures/paintings or anyone else but God, etc) you will all likewise perish (eternal fire)."

Jesus also said "no one comes to the Father except through me (no one else).

God takes sin very seriously. If I steal a car just once I will go to jail, likewise God warns that if we sin just once we will go to Hell, if we lie, steal, fornicate, commit adultery, get drunk or high, etc, just once. But its not God's will that we go to Hell.

God became a human being in Jesus. He took the blame for us and took our punishment. He went to Hell and came back, Jesus paid our fine, then arose from the dead because He is God, he can do that. But to be forgiven there are two things we must do besides just asking God to forgive you.

    # 1, you must turn away from everything that is a sin because Jesus is not a license to keep on sinning as so many people believe today. And # 2, you must put your trust in Jesus and then God will forgive us. You see, if you are in sin, you are following sin into Hell. Jesus paid for us to go to Heaven, the door is open for everyone, but if you are following sin into Hell you are going the opposite way of Jesus and Heaven. It doesn’t matter if you believe in Jesus, pray to him, or ask him to forgive you, if you are following sin into Hell you are going to Hell. What you must do is stop following sin, change direction, and turn to follow Jesus who will lead you into heaven.

It’s not a matter of just words, you must put actions to your words and not just say sorry. Words without actions to back them up is like a check without funds. If you say “I love you” to someone but don’t show it, do you really love them? If you say “I’m sorry” to someone but keep doing what’s wrong, are you really sorry? Obviously not, and they’re not going to forgive you, and neither will God. But if you say “im sorry, I won’t do it again”, then they will forgive you, and so will God, but the reason we can be forgiven is because Jesus paid our fine and opened the door for us and we respond by turning away from sin and trusting in Jesus.

We can pray something like this in privacy; “God, I’m sorry for all the sins I committed against you. I turn away from everything that is a sin and put my trust in Jesus. Please forgive me.” God will forgive you as if you have never sinned and you will supernaturally feel his presence. I tell you that from experience.

If you haven't yet turned away from sin and put your trust in Jesus, please do it today, you may not have tomorrow. We have a free will, we can choose to do wrong or right, to sin or be pleasing to God, to follow sin into Hell or follow Jesus into Heaven. The eternal choice is yours. So please choose wisely. Eternity is a long time to be regretful. Thank you for taking the time to read this. I care about where you will spend eternity.

I'm new to the diesel game. I'm sure this is a dumb question but can NOS be pumped into a diesel? I'm assuming yes cause combustion doesn't change the need for O2… but is it more dangerous in a diesel?

    2. I have a conservative amount of mods. EFI live tune, airdog 2 4g pump, performance injectors, and other minor things. Does that matter with NOS or could it be bone stock as long as I don't overuse or push too much NOS through?
