How To Chop An Onion | 1 Minute Tips | Food Busker

August 28, 2019

Hi guys. I’m going to show you how to finely slice an onion. Top the onion and then slice the onion in half. Place it down. Don’t put your knife in like this. Put it at the side. And using this finger as a guide to place the knife in each time. Make sure that the hand is like this. That way you won’t chop off your fingers because the knife runs off the finger. The heel holds the whole onion together. You’re not cutting all the way through. Slice all the way round. Score it through. Holding the whole onion together using your finger as a guide start slicing through. When you get to the end push the onion away. Drop it down so that you can get these last bits of onion here. And discard the stalk or use it in stocks. So that’s how to finely dice an onion. If you want any more tips then click on the link.

prefer the "caress your onion with a crystal and toss it into a brown paper bag with a banana" method. Much more effective haha

    Use the Jamie Crystal?

please tell me you came across the video with Jamie on the Design Taxi website… involving crystals and a paper bag. Hahaha! The best way to chop onions ever ;D https://twitter.com/designtaxi/status/592699811482234881

  • Reply Sasa Oldbarn April 29, 2015 at 9:42 pm

Thanks man! That's so much easier than I've always done it.

  • Reply HenningSchaar April 29, 2015 at 9:51 pm

The horizontal cuts never made any sense to me, the onion is already cut horizontally! 😀

  • Reply kiaranah April 29, 2015 at 9:59 pm

Love this method I live by it! Already stole it off one of Kerryanne's videos on this channel last year though 😉

  • Reply shadoom April 29, 2015 at 10:28 pm

B…but you didnt smash that up, tosser

  • Reply Señor X April 29, 2015 at 11:06 pm

that flat cut is absolutely useless, the onion is "naturaly cut" that way by itself because of the layers

  • Reply MlleNobs April 29, 2015 at 11:07 pm

I do the exact same thing as you did but it's such a pain to do the bit in the end – it seems like such a waste to throw it away and most of the time I'm using an onion I'm not making a stock… :/

  • Reply Dr. Emre's Yorkshire Canaries April 29, 2015 at 11:38 pm

The first rule of chopping anything safely is to have a really sharp knife imho.

  • Reply naili _ April 29, 2015 at 11:57 pm

  • Reply Stuart Safford April 30, 2015 at 1:14 am

I agree with Cornelius Sneed that you should get the onion cold before you chop or dice to avoid tears, and I try to angle my fingers to avoid cutting the fingertips.

  • Reply asdfrozen April 30, 2015 at 2:16 am

This is kind of an Alton Brown + traditional hybrid method.

  • Reply Rosierubbingbelly :3 April 30, 2015 at 3:41 am

  • Reply Capi Dano April 30, 2015 at 4:01 am

Awesome!!! Thanks so much!! I used to always have the knife verticals and would take the ends off first I will defenetly try this

  • Reply andoriz0r April 30, 2015 at 6:19 am

and the most important thing: you don't need to do this as fast as a chef at the beginning. learn the technique and speed will come 🙂

  • Reply Anabel Blazquez Martinez November 18, 2015 at 11:14 am

I am agree with you. It is a good and helpful trick but I hate eating onion because I don´t like the taste. I prefer eating a nice rice in front of the sea and hearing the sound of the waves.
I would like to say that I am a spanish girl. If you visit my country, you can eat a lot of healthy food such as stir-fried vegetables, fruit, fresh ingredients, pasta etc. I would recomended it because I know that you won´t regret.
    Summer her is usually lovely!
