Hallelujah Guitar Tutorial – Leonard Cohen Guitar Lesson: Fingerpicking + Easy Chords + Guitar Cover

November 15, 2019

Hallelujah Guitar Tutorial – Leonard Cohen hey guys my name’s is Dave Tran and welcome to another throwback Thursday edition of guitarzero2hero song tutorial and in today’s lesson to pay tribute to Leonard Cohen who just recently passed away i’ll be teaching you he’s timeless classic hell yeah now in this lesson I’m going to teach you two different ways of playing this song the first version is going to be a simple strand version and for the second version i’ll teach you a nice finger-picking pattern that you can use with the same chords to change up the feel a little bit also want to note that this is not the jeff buckley version this is the leonard cohen version i’m teaching but they’re both quite similar anyway so the basics you need guitar and standard tuning and no capo and you’ll need to know five chord shapes that you want to master calls back to front and be sure to head over to guitar zero to hero dot-com to pick up my friend guitar cable if you like the fray a book then you can also pick up the physical copy on amazon in the link is in the description below the five chord shapes that you’ll need to know us see a mana g and finally a mage Oh before we get into the song i want to note that this song is in 68 time so it’s got a little bit of a waltz filled with 68 timing means that there’s 68 notes in every bar so the cat all general uses one-two-three two-two-three but you can also go 123456 alright so let’s start with the easy street version starting with the internet we just have two chords it goes and gene now we’re going to use a strumming pattern that will go like piece down down down down one-two-three two-two-three and in succession down and down up down down down down down one-two-three two-two-three one-two-three two-two-three reply at once for each chord the intro which will sound like this for the first we have four lines of chords our first line will be quite easy i’ll just be seen a mana SI hay mine and then we go to the second lot of course which goes and G C and that back to jail you’re going to play H code for one strumming pattern as well now when we get to the third line of chords we go see Jane a mana and n now you’ll notice up in the annotations here I’ll put the F and the G together in a set of brackets now that just means that these two chords are shorter than all the rest both those chords are just going to be played for the first half of the strong pattern which is just the down down although 123 so that third line will sound like this 122 123 2012 2 123 so notice that F and G I just half of that strumming pattern h finally the last line of course this is gene he and then i’m on now that a martyr is extended for two strong patterns but for the second time it’s played you can just choose to strum and once we can play through one strumming pattern it’s up to you so altogether the verse will sound like this and and that’s it for the verse it’s such a great chord progression and when you play the chords by itself like that this is one of those songs we can just hear the melody on top of it which is absolutely genius and there’s not many songs out there that can be so easily recognized by their chord progressions now we get to our course and it’s not an easy just one line five chords in total we go and then a mile and then we go see and then g now above each chord you’ll see a little number and that will just indicate the amount of strumming patterns you need to play aah chord so for the f a minor and if you’ll need to play to strumming patterns h and then for the c & g just one strumming pattern so the chorus in title will sell like this now generally after every course except for the last ones at the end of the song will play two chords which will just consider a post course and they’re just the same as the intro chords it’s C and G 41 sewing pattern H so the post course we’ll just be like this one too 22 and then you head back into another verse so that’s it for the easy strong version if you wanna play along to my playthrough with a vocal track on top then just skip to the end of the video otherwise keep watching and I’ll teach you and really nice being a picking pattern that you can use for this song alright so finger-picking basics you’ll just need your thumb to take care of the 6th 5th and 4th strings and your index middle and ring finger will take care of the third second and first rings respectively and they won’t pluck any other strings other than once they’re assigned to now in terms of chords and timing absolutely nothing changes from the strong version that I just thought you were just going to implement a picking patent that you can use basically throughout the whole song and I’ll sound really great so I’ll use our first chord see here as the example for the picking pattern basically we’ll start off with the bass note of whatever called you’re playing so that’s the fifth string in this example then will pluck the fourth string third string second string third string and forestry so basically going down to the higher strings and then back up so base known for three an h-block walkera on every Bates all got one and it’s as simple as that and if you go to record like AG your bass note will now be the sixth string but you’ll still go to the fourth string the second the full so the j will sound like this and that’s the generic picking pan now you apply this to every chord that we just learned in the street version so for the interest just the sea and the G now when we get to the verse its see a mana see I mana for the first line and you’re just playing that picking pattern once 4-h court for the second line you get em and then G C and then G so the first two lines are the versatile sound like this so now we get to the third line and let’s see now we get to the F and the G remember the strong version mg were half as long as all the other chords so we’ll have to apply the same principle for this finger-picking pattern so for the F&G or just be plucking the bass note of the chord the fourth string and then the third string and that’s it so for the efforts base 4-3 and for the g base for you and then we go to the a mana which is back to the normal for picking patent and and then for the fourth floor and we have G knee and then a one now the a martyr can be played 42 picking patterns or for that second picking patent you can just hold on the single baseload alright so now apply that verse at a slower speed and full speed I’ll have a close-up of my picking hand so you can see exactly what i’m doing but it’s a very easy picking pattern that’s applied the same to each chord ok so now we get to the course and again the calls are going to be exactly the same so we have f that i’m on and then c ng the f I’m honor and ever played 42 picking patterns and the scene the g at the end applied for one picking pattern H so the course at slow and full speed will sound like this and then for the post course it’s just those two chords cng similar to the intro and at the end of the song the course is just repeated over and over you don’t go to the post course you just keep playing the chorus over and over on a loop until the end of the Sun so now i’m going to be doing to play through the song with the backing track the first one will be a strong version the second one will be the finger-picking version so please i encourage you to play this back as many times as you’d like to practice play along too and see how you go can do catch good the you full John hmm soon view do kitchen she can’t you two I so hope you guys enjoyed this lesson for perhaps one of my favorite songs of all time had the good man rests and pace his song is a classic that will last the end of time and it’s tough so many people so it’s a really great want to learn especially to celebrate his life and to be thankful for all the music that he’s been able to provide for the world so be sure to head over the guitar zero to hero dot-com to pick up my friend guitar a book if you’ve enjoyed this video then hit that like button hit that subscribe button you know it means the world to me leave your thoughts comments and questions below and I’ll see you next time on guitar zero to hero cheers guys just before I met you that’s an issue friends it was nice to meet the sea

I've heard there was a secret chord
that David played and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music do ya
It goes like this the fourth the fifth
the minor fall and the major lift
    The baffled king composing hallelujah
    Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew ya
She tied you to a kitchen chair
She broke your throne, and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah
    Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah

    Maybe I've been here before
I know this room, I've walked this floor
I used to live alone before I knew you
I've seen your flag on the marble arch
Love is not a victory march
    It's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah
    Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah

There was a time when you let me know
What's real and going on below
But now you never show it to me, do you?
And remember when I moved in you
The Holy Dark was moving too
And every breath we drew was hallelujah
    Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah

You say I took the name in vain
I don't even know the name
But if I did, well really, what's it to ya?
There's a blaze of light in every word
It doesn't matter which you heard
The holy or the broken Hallelujah
    Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah

I did my best, it wasn't much
I couldn't feel, so I tried to touch
I've told the truth, I didn't come to fool ya
And even though it all went wrong
I'll stand before the Lord of Song
With nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah
    Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah

    Maybe there's a God above
And all I ever learned from love
Was how to shoot at someone who outdrew you
And it's not a cry you can hear at night
It's not somebody who's seen the light
    It's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah
