Desafinado (Off Key) – Bossa Nova Guitar Lesson #12: Advanced Phrase 4444

November 16, 2019

Rhythmic phrase 4444 played with half speed. The whole phrase is played with staccato. The strings are muted both by lifting left hand fingers and by right hand fingers. The same phase played in normal tempo. Start with staccato. Half of the basic phrase. Third basic phrase Here João played F#7. This section is played with legato. Basic bossa nova phrase syncopated. Third basic phrase again. The first section repeated. When transposed to D, João played E9 here. Now the chord progression is changed. It’s still played with legato. Now move to staccato. This can also be played in the 7th position but this way creates brighter sound. Back to legato and to chord progression from the beginning, only slightly different rhythmic phrases. The melody and chord progression change, still played with legato. Finally, staccato in the end of the song. Rhythmic phrase 4444 in the song closing. Ah, this is one tough cookie. isn't it? I did quick research (not thorough, obviously) of dozen versions available on YT. Rarely played from this key, beginning with Emaj7. Usually it's from Fmaj7 (covers) or Dmaj7 or Ebmaj7 (Gilberto himself, as you noticed in your description). Is it possible that original version is recorded in different key (e.g. in Eb and track pitched in E) or in half-step down tuning (so Fmaj7 became Emaj7). It's very interesting because it seems that all the interpreters, including Gilberto in all later recordings and live acts avoid original key. Btw, this 'off-key' song's use of 'Blue note' (augmented 4th/diminished 5th) is very charming and usual in Blues. Sorry for this long comment and thanks for excellent share!
    Sretna i uspješna 2017!

Hi, your lessons are really great and you are a brilliant teacher! I wonder have you tried to tab the live version of this song, I mean exactly like J.Gilberto plays it 🙂 It is in D and the first chord is a Dmaj7/F# followed by a straight E9, Em9 etc. Is there anyway one can upload alternate versions on your site ?
