Crimson Kit Guitar – Unboxing – Episode 1

November 15, 2019

I can’t begin to tell you how excited I
am to open this box. I’ve been waiting over a year. This box is from master
luthier Ben Crowe and he put up a Kickstarter campaign just over a year
ago to help expand his business of building custom guitars and in order to
do so he offered kit guitars in a Kickstarter.
I’ve been following Ben’s since his days in the garden shed building guitars when
he did the series where he tried to build a guitar start to finish in under
24 hours. It really influenced me and let me know that guitar building is
something that’s tangible. It’s something that’s not easy and you have to know
what you’re doing. You have to study the craft and and there’s a lot to it but it
is a tangible thing for everyone out there. When Ben announced his Kickstarter
I thought, of all the people I watch on YouTube Ben is fighting the good fight
and doing the right thing, He was building his business and now it’s
gotten even bigger. All of the folks over at Crimson Guitars, I really appreciate
what you do and I know there are a number of people out there like me who
want to support what you do in any way we can. One of the things that’s probably
made me laugh more than anything I’ve seen Ben do or talk about on his channel…
Ben is really good at taking things in stride and somebody once upon a time
called him… (an aside) Ben has tattoos all over his head. I’ll put a picture up (aside over) but
somebody was trying to insult him and they called him “salad head.” I about
lost it when I heard him say that,. The great thing is that Ben had a
sense of humor about it too and he had a real big smile on his face
when he said it. So now every time I see Ben I think of “salad head.” This is
supposed to be a PRS style guitar and in all honesty I’ve completely forgotten
what kind of wood this is supposed to be. So, it’ll just kind of be a surprise. The CNC that that Ben bought was… He bought it to start making kit guitars or less expensive guitars that
aren’t necessarily hand-built. He found out that it was just as expensive
to do them on the CNC. It takes just as much time. This looks pretty fantastic.
They’ve done an excellent job of sanding this down. This appears to be two pieces
joined here in the center. We;ve got routes for humbucking pickups, and of course he
fights the same fight that anybody with a CNC does… I know the battle Ben… is
what is the surface finish when you’re all said and done? The necks are
not easy to make. I don’t care who you are there’s a lot of effort and work put
into a neck. This appears to be a mahogany. it may be a sapele. I can’t
tell the difference all the time between mahogany and sapele. There’s a lot of
versions of those woods that look very very similar. It’s nice and light. So it’s
a nice truss rod. No skunk stripe. There is a scarf joint here and then this
piece appears to be a glue on here. So the tongue back here is a glue on. So
they probably do a 3-piece glue up. The tongue, the neck and the scarf joint-
headstock piece and then of course the fret board. I would assume that there is
room to fit these pieces. I could be wrong. I know this is going to have to
acclimate before I do much to it. So you will not be seeing much of the build
here at least for two or three weeks. Actually they did fit it and it fits
very very nice. If I can get it all the way back in there it’s a pretty decent
fit. Right there… Just kind of out of the box. The bottom of the pickup routes this
is a typical issue with CNC machines…
Getting the bottoms flat… Because generally you cut the pocket and then
you come and you do one last pass on the edge. If your machine’s not really
really really well indexed it’ll leave that little line there. This is going to
be a very nice guitar and I’m looking forward to… I’m gonna say this as an ash
here. That’s my that’s my guess. Ben can tell me I’m wrong… I’m gonna attempt
to do a carved body on this beast. I was thinking I would do inlays on the
fretboard here but I’ll definitely have to take the dots out and work around the
frets if I’m going to do that. I think in an ideal world I would have told
Ben, ” hey leave the frets off of it and I’ll inlay it and set the frets.”
but they’ve done a little bit of work on the frets it looks like in terms of
getting them nice and filed. They’re really really well filed. I’ll do a
dress and a level and a polish when I get done putting the guitar together and
it’s had time to acclimate. So, unfortunately I am going to have to put
this beastie aside for a while and it’s gonna kill me to let it sit here… But I
will let it sit because I don’t want to to mess it up. I know the humidity
here is night and day compared with a lot of other places in the world. So I
want to make sure that we’re not going to have any stress due to me working on
it too soon. Once again thanks to Ben Crowe and the Crimson Crew. Tom I know you were working on all of these so thanks again for this. I’m really looking
forward to the build and putting it together and playing this guitar. It will
be a piece that I’ll have for a very long time. And I’ll know that hopefully in
some way it helped out Crimson guitars. And in the same way, Crimson guitars
helped me out with a really cool one-of-a-kind guitar. Thanks guys!

VERY NICE, PROBABLY THE NICEST KIT GUITAR IV'E SEEN. NOT SUPRISED CRIMSON IS AWESOME. BEAUTIFUL ASH BODY, WENGE FINGER BOARD AND SAPELE NECK. IF THE NECK SMELLS REALLY GOOD IT'S FOR SURE SEPELE ALSO SEPELE IS MORE DENSE AND COLD TO THE TOUCH. EITHER WAY BEAUTIFUL. THE FIT AND FINISH IS WAY BETTER THAN ANYTHING I'VE SEEN OFFERED AND IF I DIDN'T ALREADY BUILD CUSTOM GUITARS I WOULD BUY ONE IN A HEART BEAT, IN FACT IF THEY RELEASE ONE OF THERE PAF MODELS AS A KIT I'LL BUY ONE FOR SURE JUST SO I CAN HAVE A GUITAR FROM CRIMSON. YEAH SALAD HEAD CRACKED ME UP TOO MAINLY BECAUSE OF HOW BEN REACTED, HE'S A CRACK UP. I THINK HIS HEAD TATTOOS ARE COOL BUT THATS JUST MY OPINION. LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING HOW YOU CUSTOMIZE THIS BADBOY. I FOLLOWED YOUR FIRST BUILD AND IT TURNED OUT GREAT. MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HOPE YOUR NEW YEAR IS AWESOME.

MAN THEY REALLY THOUGHT OUT THE GRAIN MATCH UP ON THAT BODY, MOST PLACES JUST THROW RANDOM PEICES TOGETHER BUT AFTER THAT BODY HAS A FINISH ON IT YOU PROBABLY WON'T BE ABLE TO SEE THA CENTER LINE. GOOD STUFF AND I'LL STOP HOGING THE COMMENTS NOW.

It's nice to know that Ben sells PRS style kits, especially with the neck route/neck angle, already completed.

Hello friend. Hope the business can go mile high. I've got something brewing in the hopper for ya for February 20th. This is a sweet concept. I suppose I don't know enough about guitars to know how common kit guitars are in general, but this is honestly the first time I've seen such. Though not an incredibly obscure concept to consider. But this is pretty sweet to see for the first time. Looks like Ash to me too.

Good luck with your build! I glad to hear from someone who bought a Crimson kit. I've purchased a few tools from Crimson and have been happy with the quality/cost. I have been working on my own guitars for about 35 years, but have only ventured towards building in the last three. Ben Crowe and his crew have been an inspiration!

  • Reply Nicholas January 24, 2018 at 11:16 pm

Cool video. I love Crimson creations.

  • Reply Tim Beaton February 28, 2018 at 7:17 am

Hell yes. I also bought a Crimson Kickstarter kit guitar, also a PRS stylee model. And yes, i had to wait a long time, and also got the nice personal letter apologising for the long delay. Sadly i didn't photograph/film the guitar in it's raw state, and i have after a long while (upped and moved to France, from the UK) finally started work on it.
All comments made in this video apply to mine, too. The neck is a work of art, absolutely beautifully made, and fitted the body like in the video above. I Have started, as i said, but i won't be doing much customisation, if any. So far all i have really done is to fine sand the neck and body, and am in the process of using Danish oil on the neck, and the mahogany part of the body. And it will look beautiful when it's done. I will try to film and or photograph some of the process for YT.
So, Greg (?) can't wait to see how your Crimson kit turns out. Subbed and liked!

Came here through the Crimson channel. I'm putting my pennies away so I can hopefully grab one of the LP kits when they hit the market, so I am very much looking forward to watching your build progress. Your plan so far sounds awesome! You've definitely gained a sub.

I am very interested in trying to assemble and stain a kit like that. So what does a kit just like that cost?

  • Reply Edad Martin August 3, 2018 at 11:52 pm

Why did it take a year?

  • Reply Patrick Kem September 23, 2018 at 11:29 am

Sorry ,,,,but you can have a guitar kit ordered without scarf joints and rubbish as that.

  • Reply DALG Guitars November 26, 2018 at 1:52 am

    beautiful fretboard

  • Reply John Jay February 7, 2019 at 4:46 am

I've seen that guy's videos. He seems good at what he does, but he is definitely not made to be in front of the camera. He's always speaking in that monotone quiet voice, and I've seen bags of hammers with more personality than that guy.

  • Reply JasonECI February 24, 2019 at 9:14 pm

Ben should put his tattoo on the box
