I definitely need a sheet to memorise all those chords. Gonna have to pause this video at every chord change and write this down. Sounds lovely btw and I really dig the no-talk just-play style with two camera angles and the syncopation familiarity introduction. Really nice product and I shall definitely be coming back to your channel regularly!

I must say: COMPLIMENTS! For your fantastic site: precise, professional, easy, detailed, and useful…. Till now I never found a well conceived site about bossa nova: my passion. I wonder if you can add more examples at your wonderful collection. I'd like to follow WAVE (Jobim) and CAMINHOS CRUZADOS! Please leep improving your exceptional site and example.

This is a great video lesson! I'm trying hard to learn this tune.
The last 16 note phrase 1213, is that when you make the change to the next chord, just before the measure starts?

As a way to thank you by the great work you did (and also as a good way to remember what is supposed to be played), I did a transcription of the guitar you played with sheet/notation, tabs and chord charts. I heard João Gilberto's version from 1960 "O Amor, o Sorriso e a Flor" and it's perfect.
Here you and anyone else can take a look and download the PDF file of the transcription:

Thank you for this excellent lesson. I can't help but wonder: what key is 'Corcovado' in? I'm tempted to say C major since there is Am, G7, and Dm7, but at the same time there is also Fm and D7.

  • Reply Christopher Moncrieffe July 10, 2017 at 5:04 pm

Fantastic lesson! My usual unspoken complaint is that video lessons are far too often unnecessarily wordy, especially when one can already play well and is trying to learn a different style and has to painfully wait through the rhetoric. Wow, great lesson!! I'm a fan.

  • Reply droop972 July 20, 2017 at 9:53 pm

Thank you for the great work, it make it much more easier!
I think that to add the beginnig time of each part so that we can instantly reinitiate a phase would ease even more the learning

    Please… I'm so confused….

Now you're syncopating! Nice stuff. I thought Insensatez sounded too dry. But this is excellent. Thanks!

  • Reply Gary Smith October 15, 2018 at 11:43 pm

I meant no disrespect. You're right, Gilberto doesn't syncopate the guitar on Insensatez, and it really is the perfect vehicle for that basic phrase. I dig your site very much 🙂

Gilberto is starting a phrase by playing chord and bass together for the most part. He is also in a lower key and playing different chords. Have you thought of making a tutorial where you play it like Gilberto?

  • Reply EC S March 8, 2019 at 2:34 pm

Great tutorials with all the visuals to assist. Will be able to play these beautiful bossa nova melodies in no time. Thanks a bundle!

Nice video, thanks!! Here my question:
I am a flamenco guitar player and a few months ago I starded to learn Bossa Nova Nova and I like it a lot too. But on my flamenca blanca guitar Bossa sounds a little 'hard'.
Which nylon string guitar would you recomand me to buy for Bossa Nova, if had 2000 euro left? Thank you!

To play bossa nova, do I really need a classical guitar? I think yes because the chords are harder to play on acoustic.
